Design Crush: Interview With Megan Thompson

Hi friends and welcome, thanks so much for stopping in!  Megan here, your Rock Your Remodel host and owner of  m studio interior designer!

What’s awesome about being in the interior design industry is that there’s a constant stream of amazingly incredible design projects completed by some incredibly talented interior designers that roll out on a regular basis… all over the world!  And when I see something I love, I have to share it with you all!

This month, I’m crushing on this project Upscaling in Uptown. I’d love to introduce you to Megan Thompson of Spark Interiors in Denver, CO!

Megan thrives on blending fresh inspiration with timeless elements to create spaces that resonate with her clients’ lives and emotions. Each day and project brings a unique opportunity for Megan to deliver personalized, unmatched designs. Collaborating with clients, vendors, contractors, and installers, Megan infuses her relaxed demeanor and tasteful wit into every project, ensuring a bespoke experience for all involved.

I interviewed Megan on this recent project in the Uptown neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. Here’s what she has to share!

Who did you create this design for, what were their main needs?

This design was created for our clients Rob & Emily, in Denver Colorado. They are a young couple that love to travel and Emily has a very bold sense of style! They wanted a home that could play a backdrop for their colorful collection they gather on their travels, and a space where they could entertain up to 20 guests for a party.

What design challenges did you come upon and what were the solutions?

The biggest challenge here was that this is in a condo building and we were limited by the structural columns as well some of the structural components in the floor. This restricted our floorplan in the kitchen, and created an unique challenge in the master bathroom regarding placement of the shower drain. We also had a small pillar in the guest bathroom that we could not move.

The solution in the kitchen was to maintain the existing layout and use the nook behind one of the columns to tuck in some floating shelves. We also increased access to the kitchen by changing the peninsula into an island!

In the master bathroom, we had to make a judgment call on site, during construction. We ended up raising the shower floor by 8″ since we were unable to drill into the concrete floor to move the drain to the desired location.

In the guest bathroom we hid that pillar behind our tall linen cabinet and you wouldn’t even know it was there until we told you about it!

What became your favorite part of the finished result?

The kitchen island is everything… it has bold character, it grabs your attention, its CAMBRIA quartz, and it makes the space. When our clients saw the rendering, Emily actually let out a squeal in excitement and that was the best compliment!

Do you have any recommendations for homeowners who hope to create a similar look on their own?

When you want to have a dramatic or bold space, it is important not to get carried away. In each space in your home, be sure that you have only one show-stopping finish or fixture. You will notice that our cabinets in the kitchen are black and white, nothing fancy. In the bathroom the color green is our statement, and everything else is subdued. Same with the guest bathroom, we let the tropical blue tell the story in that space.

Lastly, where can we find you for more design inspiration down the line?!
