Design Crush: Interview with Dawn Chau of Paradigm Interior Design

Greetings and welcome, dear guests! I am delighted by your presence!! I am Megan, your gracious host of Rock Your Remodel and the proud proprietor ofm studio interior designer.

What truly distinguishes the realm of interior design is the ceaseless flow of astonishingly magnificent design endeavors, masterminded by a plethora of exceptionally gifted interior designers, unfurling globally on a frequent basis. When an exquisite creation captures my heart, I am compelled to bestow it upon all of you.

This month, I’m crushing on this reimagined home in Boulder, CO.  I’d love to introduce you to Dawn Chau of Paradigm Interior Design, Inc.!

Hailing from the breathtaking landscapes of Montana, Dawn has firmly rooted herself in the vibrant state of Colorado, where she wears her multifaceted identity with pride. A doting mother of three, she is not just an ardent admirer of the outdoors, but a true enthusiast who thrives amidst nature’s wonders.

Dawn’s innate creativity is an integral part of her essence, an unwavering force that fuels her passion for construction and design. She revels in the art of crafting, taking great joy in bringing her imaginative ideas to life. Whether sketching out space plans or rolling up her sleeves to engage in the nitty-gritty of construction, she doesn’t shy away from getting her hands delightfully dirty to transform her visions into reality.

Her wanderlust spirit knows no bounds, with travel being a cherished aspect of her life. Her voyages, whether they lead her to the lush jungles of Costa Rica or the thrilling mountain biking trails nestled in her own backyard, have a profound influence on her aesthetic sensibilities. Every adventure she embarks upon infuses her design sensibilities with a unique blend of cultural insights and the raw beauty of the natural world, making her a connoisseur of life’s grand tapestry. Dawn is a living testament to the harmonious fusion of artistry, family, and an unwavering love for the great outdoors.

I interviewed Dawn on her recent project in Boulder, CO.  Here’s what she has to share!

Who did you create this design for, what were their main needs?

For this project, we helped our clients reimagine an unremarkable space into a sophisticated setting dripping in jewel tones. Avid entertainers who recently moved to Boulder from NYC, these clients craved a true dining room and space to lounge in—which we created through the transformation of an unused office space.

The dining room was connected to their den and finished with custom cabinetry to give the home loads of drama upon entry. We leveled the living room (from a step down)to eliminate a tripping hazard and create better flow. A master suite was reimagined to create ample storage with his-and-her closets and a more open, functional bathroom. All windows, doors, millwork and exterior were updated for an overall sleek, updated appearance. Dramatic colors and lighting were the signature finishing touch.

What design challenges did you come upon and what were the solutions?

The client’s daughter was facing some health challenges and a step down into the living room was not practical for them.  The biggest challenge in this project was raising the sunken living room.

Though this sounds easy enough it ended up triggering some code requirements with our windows.  They either had to be moved up from the new floor or they all had to be replaced as tempered glass.  We chose to move them up for the overall aesthetic otherwise they would have looked too low.

What became your favorite part of the finished result?

My favorite part of the finished product is the vibrant colors throughout and the den.  I could sit in there all evening and sip cocktails with friends!

Do you have any recommendations for homeowners who hope to create a similar look on their own?

When using bold colors (or any color really) it’s important to use a similar tone throughout the house.  If you use pastel colors in one room and deep, rich colors in another, the home will be disjointed.  Don’t be afraid of color, embrace it!

Lastly, where can we find you for more design inspiration down the line?!
